‚P National Census is a very important survey conducted every five years. It targets all the people and households living in Japan.
‚Q Foreign nationals are non exceptions.
‚R The outcome of the census will form the basic database to be utilized in various aspects of our livelihood such as promotion of internationalization, child welfare, nursing and medical affairs for the elderly, employment measures for young people, and revitalization of local areas.
¡Census forms will be distributed starting in late September.¡
1.Census staff will visit each household and hand out the document.
2.To insure those people who do not understand Japanese can fill in the forms after they fully understand the questions, the census forms are prepared in Japanese and 27 languages including Chinese, Korean, and Portuguese. The census guideline which explains how to answer the questionnaires is also prepared in Japanese and 27 other languages.
3.The contents consist of 15 issues related to the members of the household (ggenderh,gbirth datesh,gmarriage statush,gstate of employmenth,gwork / school locationh, etc.) and 5 issues related to the household (number of the members in the householdh,ghousing typeh,ghousing structureh, etc.)
¡Your private information shall be strictly kept confidential. \No worries for filling in the form.\ ¡
‚P The form you filled and enclosed in the envelope can be returned to the census staff who visits your home or submitted by postal mail to your municipal contact.
‚Q@The census staff and all other workers involved in the national census are strictly subject to the confidentiality obligation stipulated by Statistics Act of Japan to protect personal information.
‚R The content you contributed to the census form shall never be used for any other purpose but statistics.
‚S The documents shall be kept under locks and keys and there will be no accessibility to them. After the statistic work is over, the documents will be dissolved and recycled into paper.

Throughout its history Shiojiri has been a central point in transportation. Its name, "the end of salt," refers to a former salt trade route originating from the Japan Sea in the North, which terminated at Shiojiri. Today there are JR train lines, highways, and national roads running from Tokyo and Nagoya, through Shiojiri, all the way out to the Sea of Japan.
Shiojiri is also home to Nagano prefecture's only airport, connecting Shiojiri to places such as Hokkaido and Kyushu in less than 90 minutes.
1959, the year that Shiojiri became a city, witnessed the beginning of a grassroots campaign for city development. With its central location and the enthusiastic cooperation of its citizens, Shiojiri strives to make continued progress in society; in information, industry, culture, and tourism.
Shiojiri has 3 Sister Cities: Minami Izu and Itoigawa in Japan, and Mishawaka in America.
Shiojiri and Mishawaka share a longstanding and very close and active relationship. Almost every year, young people from Shiojiri visit Mishawaka, and vice versa, learning about each other's countries and cultures.
